I get it. You want to go to Disney. Maybe you’ve never been before, or maybe it’s been just a couple of years since your last visit, but you have this aching in your heart that you just can’t stop. I’ve been there. You need your Disney fix. And your parents just don’t understand.
Convincing parents can be tough, really tough if your mother is anything like mine. So I wanted to give you my very own step by step guide to help you get to the happiest place on Earth. These ways are slightly… unconventional. But here’s how I convinced my parents to take my brothers and I to Disney in 2010.
Step 1
Ask your parents.
It’s easy, and important. Just say, “Mom, Dad, think we could go to Disney World this year?”
Don’t worry too much about their reaction. This is really just to give you an understanding of how difficult the task ahead of you is. Plus, they might say yes. But if you’re reading this right now you’ve probably already asked, or are anticipating a definite “no.” I asked my mom in 2009 and she said, “Well, we might do something else this summer, we could do something different… blah, blah, blah… no… no… blah, blah, blah…” (I think that’s how it went, word for word). I backed down. Or made it look like I did, anyway. Generally, the more you challenge the parents, the more you’ll irritate them, so it’s time to get creative.
Step 2
Begin your Disney invasion.
The key is to start subtle. You don’t want to annoy your parents, the goal is to make them find you endearing in your genuine efforts. Order your free Disney vacation planning DVD from the Disney website. Order it to your parents’ house, in one of their names. They probably won’t watch it (but you can, they’re wonderful) and that’s not the point. The point is to get them curious about your determination.
Step 3
Step it up.
I got my two brothers on board (it’s crucial to have a united front with your siblings going into this) and we typed up 100 reasons why we should go to Walt Disney World. It had things on it like, “We’ll get to meet Mickey Mouse,” “We can ride Tower of Terror,” “I’ll let you wear your fanny pack and won’t even make fun of you.” Then we cut them up and hid them all over the house. The key here is to put them in rooms that your parents use (so hiding them in your room isn’t a good idea). Put them in their bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, computer room, living room, family room, mud room, etc. Tape some in obvious places, again, you want to pique their curiosity, make them laugh. Then get sneaky, tape them on the inside of cupboards, sides of fridges, places that could be overlooked, but would be spotted eventually. Also hide some in some very difficult places, just for fun (we’re still finding some in my house).
Step 4
Take it to another level.
Very similar to the above tactic, make the Mouse part of your house. I cut out a couple hundred tiny pictures of Mickey Mouse and left them around the house. On top of DVDs, in books my parents were reading, on the table, in the dog’s collar, etc.
Step 5
Make Disney unavoidable.
I live away from home most of the year, so I had to figure out the long-distance ways I could harass my parents. I wrote them down. My mom has Facebook, email, a landline and a cell phone. Each day, I would contact her via one of those with a Disney message. I would post on her Facebook wall, I found a photo of a random mom with Mickey Mouse and wrote, “This could be you this summer.” I would text her inspiring Disney quotes. I signed her up on the Disney website to have emails sent to her about Disney deals. I would call home when I knew my family would all be out, then let “It’s a Small World” play on the answering machine for a few minutes, and hang up without saying anything.
Step 6
Make it personal.
Have you been to Disney before? Put the photos out where your parents will see them. Make that picture of your whole family in front of the Magic Kingdom castle the desktop background. Any Disney stuffed toys? Put them on their bed, looking adorable. Put on home movies from trips you took to Disney when you were younger. Watch them when your parents are home and likely to come in and see how cute you were when you met Aladdin in 1998.
Step 7
Wait.
At Easter in 2010, my brothers and I were doing our annual Easter egg hunt around the house. No, we are not too old for this. You are never too old to race around the house and push your siblings out of the way for chocolate. Anyway, we were collecting eggs and something compelled me to check inside the microwave (I’m an outside-the-box kind of thinker) and there was a big chocolate egg inside. My youngest brother grabbed it and ran away, but my mum saw and called us into the family room. When we opened the egg, there was a decapitated Mickey head (from a PEZ dispenser [not as creepy as it sounds]) and a note that said, “You are cordially invited to come to Disney World to meet Mickey and his friends.”
It was magical.
It worked for me, and I hope it works for you.
If your parents don’t cave in, they are probably heartless and you’ll likely end up going camping 40 minutes from your house this summer. There is little you can do about this other than wait until your old enough to move out.
Of course, if finances are tight, you’ll have to be understanding. Look into ways you can do Disney on the cheap, there are some excellent websites with tips for this. Consider entering contests, Disney usually has some going on (I know they do right now) and so do other companies. Help your family to save up and see if you can go in a couple of years.
No matter what the case, good luck convincing your parents. It’s a hard job, but I’m sure you can do it.
With love,
Kyra

Kyra Springer said:
Just be persistent! Make it fun and personalize it when trying to convince your parents, you want to come off as adorable, not annoying. Your parents will not want to take you to Disney if you’re annoying.
But if all else fails, try to understand what their reasons are if they’re flat-out refusing. Also figure out what your reasons are for wanting to go to Disney. Then try to find some common ground there.
Good luck!

Hi, I seriously want to go to Disney world. Right now I’m sitting here, cutting out little Mickey mouses (like you said to do)trying to figure out how to ask my parents.I am just so nervous about what they will say. I don’t want to make them mad at me, But I feel like Iam going to explode if I don’t ask.You see,I’ve never been to disney. What do I do?
Kyra Springer said:
Hi Tabitha!
It’s so exciting that you’re going to ask your parents! They shouldn’t get mad at you for asking, just be reasonable and understanding. If they do get upset, just try to be mature and figure out why, then go from there. Just go ahead and ask during a conversation with them that’s going well, let them know how badly you want to go to Disney and figure out what your family needs to do to get there. Do your research, know about cheap(er) ways to do Disney (as far as transportation and hotels go, especially). More than anything, make it about family-time. Just be brave and do it! Asking is the hardest part, but it’ll let you see where you’re at. Let me know how it goes!

You’re officially a miricle worker. (; thank you so much for this advice. Its helping a lot so far. I’ve been trying to convince them for about 8-9 months now that we should go to Disney. At first I had a trip planned for 2015 then I changed it to March 2014. I change my mom’s laptop’s desktop background every single day, and I’ve hidden 15 reasons around the house and 5 mickeys. I copied your 100 reasons and printed it out and just let it on the counter and didn’t say a word or leave a note or anything. You’ve really helped. My birthdays coming up this Saturday and I’m not sure why but I feel like I’m gonna wake up on Saturday and they’re gonna tell me somehow. I don’t really know why I think that! Hahah. Wish me luck! Anymore techniques you can tell me?(: thanks!
Kyra Springer said:
That is so amazing, Allison! You are such a trooper for sticking it out so long–my parents took forever to convince, too!
As far as other techniques go, you definitely have the right tactics. You’re being subtle about it, not too over the top and whiny. I recommend that you keep slipping little Disney reminders into their lives. If your mom packs a lunch for work, stick a Disney photo in there. Buy a little Mickey plush or toy and put it on their dresser or bedside table (creepy, but effective). Buy a Disney character key chain and put it on their key ring. Just think of little ways to keep Disney in their minds–and it helps if you’re adorable.
Also, don’t get discouraged! I hope your birthday brings good news about a Disney trip, but if it doesn’t, just keep up your hard work. You’ll get there, I’m sure!
Happy early birthday and keep me updated! Good luck, Allison!

Hi it’s me again! I asked my parents but they didn’t give me a defiant answer. Every night before bed, I’ve benn putting on little Mickey Mouse cartoons. I’ve been texting my mom pictures of Mickey and Minnie. I’ve just been giving little hints. Then last night I was alone with my dad and I asked him one more time (just in case!) and my dad said maybe later this year or the beginning of next year!! I got so exited I started to do the snoopy happy dance. Im going to try and bring it up at dinner tonight. Wish me luck! Tabitha
Tabitha said:
My dads pretty easy, but my moms really hard to convince. My dad says if I stop doing tricks to convince, maybe they will say yes but if I am not a part of this I will go bezerkers! What do I do?
Kyra Springer said:
Hi Tabitha! I’m loving the updates, so keep them coming!
I totally get where you’re coming from. Just remember that your aim is to get Disney in their heads, not annoy them with it. Because your dad asked you to stop your tricks, now is a good time to back off a little. Give them some time and space to think about it–they definitely know what you want, so now it’s time for them to figure it all out. Disney requires a lot of planning and money, so I’m sure your parents have some thinking to do.
After you give them a bit of time (depending on their attitudes, this can be anywhere from a week to a month from now, try to figure out how much time they need based on their recent reactions), just ask gently where they’re at in the thought process. Find out a timeline for the trip, when (or if) they think you might be able to go, then go from there.
It also helps to be on your best behavior In your everyday life. Stay on top of your chores and school. Be helpful, be cute. You want them to want to take you on vacation, so put in a bit of extra effort.
I’m sure you’ll get there! You certainly are persistent and you absolutely deserve a trip to Disney!
Let me know how it goes!

I’m 12 and I’ll be 13 in January. I have a big family – the youngest of 6 kids. When I was about 6/7 my parents took only me to Disney, and left everyone else at home (haha, suckers!) . Well now my parents have been split for maybe 3.5 years, and I’ve been convincing my mom to take me to Disney for 1 an a half years! She keeps saying no because it’s too expensive, as a single parent.. Blah blah blah.
As I said, I’ll be 13 in January. I love big parties but I don’t want one this year. I don’t want to have a lot of people over. I jut want to go to Disney with my bestfriend (aka my next-door neighbor). I’ve been thinking about asking either o my parents to take me and her to Disney for my birthday (mom first- she’s the toughest when it comes to getting me things. My dads pretty easy, bc I’m more of a daddy’s girl). My siblings can stay home without a problem, because they’re 18-26…and then there’s me ranking in at 12. Pretty big age difference. Btw i have a different dad than all of them.
Now back to the topic–
Im going to ask but I’m almost positive they’re going to say no!
Kyra Springer said:
Hey, Selena!
You sound really determined and passionate-excellent traits to have! I think your plan is a good one, trying one parent and then another. Definitely do your research, look for cheaper hotels and ways to do the parks; your mom is right, it is an expensive trip, especially for a single parent to pay for.
That said, since your birthday is months away, it’s a good chance for your parents (if they say yes) and you (if you have any money) to start saving. Definitely ask, then go from there!
Let me know how it goes!

hi, great tips! i just went to disney for the first time in 6 years last year. I had a blast! I wanna go again so but buy my older siblings don’t! I think if they wanted to my parents would say yes. how do I convince my siblings to go??
Kyra Springer said:
Hi Lizzie!
This can definitely be a challenge! I have two younger brothers who never quite shared my love for Disney World, so I get where you’re coming from. Like I said in the post, a united front is crucial. The best news is this: there is something at Disney for absolutely everyone. Just remind them that Disney is not a typical amusement park–there are outstanding shows and entertainment, in addition to the rides. Find out what they like to do, then run with it.
Stunt shows? Think Hollywood Studios, Lights, Motors, Action! or Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular
Amazing food? Try the new Be Our Guest restaurant (at lunch you don’t need a reservation and it’s beautiful), or eat/drink around the world in Epcot
Thrill rides? Test Track is all new and classics like Rock n’ Rollercoaster or Tower of Terror are as great as ever.
Hand them a copy of 100 Reasons to go to Disney (https://kyraicp.wordpress.com/2013/05/12/100-reasons-to-visit-disney/)
See if that might change their minds! Good luck!

Hey, so, I’m 12 and I haven’t been to Disney since I was about 7 1/2. My brother and I both would really like to go again, and I’m literally jumping up and down just thinking about it. I’m a very good planner, I spent 9 months convincing my parents to get me a guinea pig with a 14 page essay and two 8 “page” power points. My plan is for my brother (9) and I to save or recycle old tests we get an A on, about three each. Then we will present them to my parents along with the question. I already have calculated the price of room plus food and rides per night, we would stay for about 2 1/2 weeks over the summer. Your post has helped so much, I have everything ready in a big bag for after the question. Again, excessive planner. I will update you on how it goes. Any suggestions?
Kyra Springer said:
Hi Emma,
I totally bow down to you. You are amazing. You are exactly the same kind of girl who I was when I was your age. And, if you’re as similar to me as I think you are, you’re likely extremely determined and won’t take no for an answer.
You sound completely brilliant and convincing, the fact that you have your brother on board is awesome. Know your facts, keep up your research and be prepared to present it in a convincing way.
Disney can be a hard-sell, it’s expensive and your parents will likely need time to consider their decision. Be patient, let me know if you hit any speed bumps and I will be happy to help however I can.
Good luck!

🙂 Thank you sooo much! You are amazing. I put pictures of Mickey around the house, and it made my Mom laugh. Then, she was looking something up online and I was sitting next to her, watching. “This costs as much as going to Florida!” She said. “I want to go to Disney!” I said. I’m just like that. “We’ll see.” I was also talking about which hotel we should stay in, blah blah blah. “I’ll ask your uncle about that.” My mother is my mother and she hints at stuff. We have been talking about it a lot recently, because of me, but we may go!
I also have been trying harder at school and at after school things, and she has noticed. I think she is catching on for how hard I am trying. I have a whole list of things to do to convince my parents.
I also wanted to ask a question: How do I tell my mom I want to go to Disney for my birthday?
THANK YOU! ❤ ❤ ❤
Kyra Springer said:
Way to go, Ellie! You are well on your way. It sounds like you’re very determined and convincing. Your next steps are making sure that you do some research, Disney is expensive and your mother will need to be convinced. Maybe mention to your mom about the possibility of Disney for your birthday. Hey Kyra, I was wondering if you and/or some of the commenters could answer a question of mine- Is it worth it to bring a small day bag into the parks, and if so, how long are the usual lines to have your bag checked? Thanks!
Kyra Springer said:
Hi Emma,
I definitely recommend bringing a day bag! It’s perfect for carrying a water bottle, sun screen, snacks and anything else you need.
The lines for bag check take less than one minute to get through at every park (except maybe at opening, but even then, Disney is so quick and efficient). The time difference is absolutely minuscule and having a small bag (or backpack, even) is just so convenient.
I welcome anyone else to comment with advice on bags, too! Great question.

Hi Kyra,
My name is Tasia, and I have always really wanted to go to Disney World! Every since I was a little girl, I loved Disney. I had pretty much watched every single Disney movie, atleast twice each. I had always ask my parents if we could go, but never got the answer, I was looking for. My parents, mostly my mom don’t care for Disney World. My mother would much rather go to Holland, or France, someplace far away, then spend time in a Disney Park. I so want to go. You see the thing is, I had tried to apply for this Ultimate Science Trip, at my school, that allows lucky kids to go to Disney World. I had wanted it so bad. I wished upon a star, and prayed that I would be accepted. I had little ‘luck games’ with myself, as if I walk along the big mud rocks near my house, perfectly, I’ll go. But when I had received the letter explaining that I didn’t get through. I was devastated, and my parents felt so bad for me. And so to go to Disney World would mean so much! I followed your tips. I asked my mom and she said “I don’t think so. Besides I don’t want to go to Disney anyways.” But I’m still hoping. I ordered the DVD, and now I’m just waiting. I’m going to follow the rest of your tips, and hope that my parents have a heart, haha!
Thanks again!
And I’ll keep you posted!

You’re a genius!
I have yet to try all these ideas, but when I knew my parents would say no, I calculated ALL the money and went from them not wanting anything to do with Disney, to at least letting me go with my sister, by ourselves (18+).
Now to convince her….
Thanks for the ideas!

I’m so glad I found this I’ve been to Disney a lot and I’m eleven, my parents say it’s kind of expansive but if they have any way they can find to go they’ll take it. I watched home videos of me at Disney today and my parents want to go to now. thanks so much for this website all I need now is to get my siblings on board which won’t be hard thank u
